Recently I wanted to watch a video song of Britney Spears in youtube. The song I was looking for was there in Youtube and found it in the Britney's official video channel. I was so happy and clicked on the video. Damn it!!!, I got an error message saying "This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions." Youtube url of the restricted video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DdCFczrodc As usual when denial is there I wanted watch this video from Sri Lanka anyhow. 1st thing came into my mind was proxy bypassing. So, I went to my favorite proxy bypasser http://www.hide-x.com. With proxy bypassing I managed to access the page for the video, but again Youtube player gave an error saying "An error occurred, please try again later". Then the big fellow "Tor" came into my mind and it did work for me. So, I thought of writing an article on Tor as others may face same kind of a scenario. Linux Users If you are in a Debian based OS just open the terminal and type the following command as root. "apt-get install tor" Gentoo users can use the following command. "emerge tor" . Then it will fetch the necessary packages and install Tor on you Linux PC. Otherwise you can download the source codes and compile and install Tor with the following set of commands.(You should have gcc installed on your system) "wget http://downloads.heshanj.info/tor-0.2.0.34.tar.gz" "chmod 755 tor-0.2.0.34.tar.gz"
"tar -xBvf tor-0.2.0.34.tar.gz" "cd tor-0.2.0.34" "./configure && make && src/or/tor" Windows Users Download the exe file from here. (Download) The double click on the file and install it as follows. 1. Select the language for installer and click ok. 2. Click next. 3. Tor requires Firefox for optimum performance. If Firefox is not already installed on your PC it may prompt you to install Firefox. Download and install the Firefox and restart the installation again or click next to install without Firefox. You can install Firefox at a later time. 4.Select all the four packages and click next. 5. Click install.
After installing Tor on Linux or Windows open Firefox and configure it as follows. Linux users, Edit -> Prefernaces -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings -> Select "Manual proxy configuration" -> Type SOCKS Host as "localhost" and Port as "9050" -> Select "SOCKS v5" if not selected Windows users, Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Network -> Settings -> Select "Manual proxy configuration" -> Type SOCKS Host as "localhost" and Port as "9050" -> Select "SOCKS v5" if not selected Then just enter the url you want to access. That's it. You can watch all the restricted stuff. Here is the song I wanted to watch. One more thing. Accessing Tamilnet website of LTTE is restricted inside Sri Lanka. I used the proxy bypassing method to access it in the past. But with Tor I was able to access it just by typing their url directly in the browser address bar. So, theritically this method should work to gain access to any restricted website from any country. As an example, Youtube is restricted in China and they can use Tor to access Youtube without any restrictions.
